In the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, we’re showing how sustainability and consumer health can move forward together.
In 2024, Nicorette® took a significant step forward by becoming one of the first brands in the region to use our Sustainable Innovation Profiler (the Profiler)—a patent-pending tool we’ve developed to guide product design toward more sustainable outcomes without compromising on safety, usability, or performance.
The Profiler evaluates products across four principles: product environmental footprint, product carbon footprint, green chemistry, and packaging circularity. By comparing new designs against existing ones, it helps research and development teams make smarter, more sustainable choices.
For Nicorette®, the focus was packaging—a critical part of delivering a product that’s both protective and accessible. The team reimagined the lozenge primary pack by replacing plastic with a PET-coated cardboard solution. This innovative new design maintains the crucial moisture barrier needed to protect product integrity and is ISO certified for child resistance and adult usability.
But we didn’t stop at the lab. We took the new packaging directly to consumers to ensure it met their needs. It also delivered measurable environmental benefit with a 171-ton reduction in virgin plastic use, achieved without sacrificing performance. That’s progress in action—a solution that balances functionality, compliance, and sustainability in one integrated process.
This breakthrough showcases how Europe is leading in sustainable packaging innovation and highlights how we’re putting science to work every day. This packaging redesign is more than just a materials change—it represents a shift in mindset. And it’s just one more way we’re delivering on our promise to realize the extraordinary power of everyday care.
