Innovation at Kenvue means more than breakthrough science—it’s about designing products that care for both people and the planet. Creating a healthier future requires integrating sustainability into every stage of product development, starting with the earliest design decisions.
Our commitment took a major leap forward with the pilot (2024) and launch (2025) of the Sustainable Innovation Profiler (the Profiler)—a patent-pending tool that helps research and development teams measure the environmental and social performance of product prototypes in real time. Now embedded into our Human-Centered Innovation process, the Profiler empowers scientists and engineers to make smarter, more responsible choices from the start.
The Profiler evaluates products across four principles: product environmental footprint, product carbon footprint, green chemistry, and packaging circularity. By comparing prototype scores against baseline products, this powerful tool highlights improvement opportunities across the entire product lifecycle. Plus, it ensures that progress in one area—like reducing carbon emissions—isn’t offset by unintended impacts elsewhere, such as water use or ecotoxicity.
What sets the Profiler apart is its ability to make environmental data more accessible to our teams. It combines the latest information, including data from suppliers, and uses widely accepted methods to assess environmental impact. This means sustainability now becomes a standard consideration—not a final checkpoint.
The redesign of OGX® Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo highlights the potential of our approach1. Using the Profiler, the team was able to improve across all four sustainability metrics:
- 15% reduction in environmental footprint, fueled by a new surfactant system and reductions in silicones and polymers.
- 16% decrease in total carbon footprint, driven by formulation changes and the use of a 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) HDPE bottle.
- 11-point improvement in green chemistry score by removing more persistent chemistries.
- 30-point boost (out of 50) in packaging circularity, with fully recyclable PCR bottles.
These results show what’s possible when sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. And it’s not just about the numbers. Our A New View of Care report shows that 85% of global consumers say sustainability is important when choosing health and wellness products. The Profiler helps meet that expectation—without compromising on safety, efficacy, or performance.
The Profiler is designed to be a catalyst—helping ensure that the innovation pipeline continues to deliver trusted products while delivering a healthier future for people and the planet.
