Sun safe checklist

  • The best sunscreen is the one you will use every day. Keep it where you’ll remember to apply regularly, like near your toothbrush or keys.
  • Apply a liberal amount of your broad spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, every day. Reapply every two hours or more frequently, especially after exercise.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, long sleeves and pants for additional protection.
  • The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. during daylight savings time. Always go for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30, but pack something higher if you’ll be out and about during these peak hours.

What is SPF and what do the SPF numbers mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. This is basically how well a sunscreen spray or sunscreen lotion is going to protect you against sunburn.

So how about those numbers like SPF 30 and SPF 50?

The SPF number tells you how much UVB light (those are the ones that cause sunburn) a sunscreen can filter out. Science tells us that an SPF 15 can filter 93% of the sun’s UVB rays. Honestly, that isn’t enough protection. SPF 30 can filter 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. Much better!
